Fine Thread vs Coarse Thread
The difference comes down to pitch: for the same diameter, fine threads have a smaller pitch, so more turns fit in a given length. That makes them the better choice when the joint needs precise adjustment or a shorter thread engagement.
Coarse threads, with their larger pitch, are easier to start and more forgiving of minor damage or contamination-which is why they dominate general-purpose fastening.
How to choose: start from the thread spec of the tapped hole or mating part. A fine-thread screw has to match the specified diameter and pitch; don't pick by appearance.
Fine Thread Selection Guide
1. Pitch first. Nail down both nominal diameter and pitch - M10×1.0 and M10×1.5 are different screws and won't interchange.
2. Match the mating thread. The screw has to match the tapped hole; a fine-thread screw won't go into a coarse-thread hole of the same diameter.
3. Length and engagement. Account for joint thickness and how much thread engagement you need. In a blind hole, leave enough margin so the screw doesn't bottom out.
4. Strength. Use class 10.9 where the joint design calls for it, and check that the mating parts and tightening method can take it.
5. Finish. Black oxide and black zinc plating are not the same coating - specify which one, and the corrosion protection you need.
