Serrated flange nut
Teeth under the flange bite into the contact surface, adding friction against vibration loosening. Use it on hard, unpainted steel where marks are acceptable. It is not a lock nut-for high-vibration joints, use a nylon-insert or all-metal lock nut.
Smooth flange nut
A flat bearing surface that spreads clamp load without marking the part. The right choice for painted, aluminum, soft or visible surfaces where appearance has to stay intact.
