FAQ

Q: The drawing says 8.8 but a supplier quoted me 4.8 at a better price. Can I use the 4.8 rod?

A: Not on a calculated hanger. Grade 8.8 is specified because the hanger load, sag limit and seismic case were worked out against its nominal strength. Substituting 4.8 changes the design basis and the run sags or stretches under load. If cost is the issue, reduce the rod size on the engineer's approval rather than dropping the grade.

Q: My hanger sagged a few weeks after installation. Was the rod faulty?

A: Almost never. Sag comes from one of three things: a single nut per end that unwound, an under-torqued joint that settled, or a grade below the design value. Check the nut locking first, then the grade marking on the rod end, then the anchor at the structure. We supply grade marked rod so the check takes a minute.

Q: Plated 8.8 or stainless for a damp plant room?

A: If the room stays damp but not washed down, plated 8.8 with a touch up at cut ends is usual. If water runs over the hanger or the air carries chloride, go stainless. The decision is about the water path over the assembly, not the room label.
